A friend of mine sent me this quote last Friday, and it was perfect:
“How sad it is when someone comes to you looking for Jesus, and all they see is you”
Have you ever thought about what others see when they see you? I know other opinions shouldn’t matter, but what matters is whether they see Jesus or you.
When I speak or sing at an event or at church, I always pray this beforehand: Please, God, let them see and hear You through me.
Isn’t that what we want people to see? So how do we do that?
We can find the answers in His word:
- John 15:12 My command is this: Love each other as I have loved you. Greater love has no one than this: to lay down one’s life for one’s friends.
Show care for others, mirroring how Christ loved us regardless of our flaws. Love the people that are difficult to love.
- Colossians 3:13 Bear with each other and forgive one another if any of you has a grievance against someone. Forgive as the lord forgave you.
Let go of all bitterness and extend grace to those who have hurt you, just as Christ forgave. Your forgiveness is a powerful testimony.
- John 3:30: He must become greater; I must become less.
Put others first, have a servant’s heart, and let God lift you instead of seeking your own glory.
- Ephesians 4:29 (NIV) “Do not let any unwholesome talk come out of your mouths, but only what helps build others up according to their needs, that it may benefit those who listen.”
Use your speech to build people up, tell the truth, and offer comfort instead of a critical or judgmental spirit.
- James 2:14-17
14 What good is it, my brothers and sisters, if someone claims to have faith but has no deeds? Can such faith save them?
We must back up our words with faithful action. Help those in need and live with consistent integrity every day.
- James 4:8: “Draw near to God, and he will draw near to you.”
Stay grounded through prayer, Scripture meditation, and worship so your transformation comes from time with Him. Build a relationship with Him and stay connected to the vine.
- James 4:10 instructs: “Humble yourselves before the Lord, and he will exalt you.”
Be willing to be at the bottom, not the top; surrender control.
Our world needs to see more Jesus and less of us. Everyone around us should see Jesus through us. Through what we do and what we say.
This is why it is so important to begin every day in his word, building a hedge of protection around us. Then we can walk daily so others see and hear Jesus through us.
So ask yourself: what do others see in me? Do they see Jesus?
And-
- Begin every day in the Word
- Serve others as Jesus served
- Fill your cup so you can fill other cups
As Father Mike says, I’ll pray for you; you pray for me
As Tara Leigh Cobble says, He’s where the joy is
And never forget, Cupcake loves you, but so does Jesus.
