I really need to trim the fat. I went to the doctor last week and have several back issues, but they would be better if I trimmed the fat. Isn’t it difficult to trim the fat? So many good things out there, like chocolate pie, cheeseburgers, pizza, and more.
Trimming the fat doesn’t just mean the weight we carry on our bodies. It can mean the fat that we carry in life.
Just what is trimming the fat?
Trimming the fat means cutting away nonessential things. When we trim the fat, we get rid of things that make us less efficient; we remove unnecessary parts and waste.
In the book I shared before, Your Sacred Yes, the author helps us understand that we need to trim the fat to be productive for Christ. She lists so many life-draining fats in our lives, such as:
Pressures we carry
the need to impress
the need to worry about other opinions
the need to gain acceptance
the fear of rejection
the need to fill a gap or role that God didn’t ask of us
the need to postpone conflict
the need to compensate for shortcomings in another area of life
(The Sacred Yes- Susie Larson- page 37)
When we carry extra fat, we are out of balance. We can’t function very well when we carry things we shouldn’t be carrying. But let’s be honest: sometimes we just can’t let go of the fat; it can be hard.
So how do we trim the excess stubborn fat we carry?
We begin by being connected to the vine. When we are deeply connected to Christ and have a relationship with Him, we can see the fruit He blesses us with. When we recognize what fruit we carry, we can serve with abundance, as He wants us to, and discard what He doesn’t want us to.
By having a relationship with Him, He will help us trim away the fat: unhealthy habits, distractions, and sins. We will learn how to trim the fat off our days so we can manage what God has given us to do.
It can be difficult, just as losing fat on our bodies. We have to determine what is fat in our lives and what isn’t. Look at your days and your schedules, and ask yourself: What do I think is a necessity, and what is just extra weight?
Then ask, God, what fat is in front of me? What fat do I keep carrying? What things go along with my gift, and what things don’t? Some things we think are necessities, but God will tell us they are unwanted pounds holding us back.
After you dissect your life, and after you and God discuss it and pray about it, you can begin by trimming the fat.
In John 15:2 (AMP), Jesus says, Every branch in Me that does not bear fruit, He takes away; and every branch that continues to bear fruit, He [repeatedly] prunes, so that it will bear more fruit [even richer and finer fruit].
This scripture tells us that what we do that doesn’t bear fruit must be cut, much like shedding fat. If we don’t, the extra fat can impact the whole body.
It is time to trim the fat, shed the weight holding you back, and be productive. Only then do we produce the healthiest version of ourselves for Christ.
So-
Start every day in the Word
Serve others just as Jesus serves
Fill your cup so that you can fill other cups
As Father Mike says, I’ll pray for you; you pray for me
As Tara Leigh Cobble says he’s where the joy is
And as I tell my grandkids- Cupcake loves you, but so does Jesus.
