Have you ever been thirsty? I know you have. Sometimes I am satisfied with water, but sometimes I need something with a little flavor, like a Diet Coke. Everyone is thirsty at some point, but what are you thirsty for, or what will quench your thirst?
Every morning, I start my day by listening to the Worship Initiative daily devotion. Recently, as I was out walking, the devotion focused on John 3:16—a verse almost everyone knows. It emphasized that the gift we receive from God isn’t just about eternal life, but about experiencing the fullness of that life here and now. In this passage, Jesus speaks to Nicodemus about what true, eternal life means. The devotion pointed out that while we often trust God to save us, we rarely trust Him to truly satisfy us. We see Him as our Savior, our ticket to heaven, yet we keep searching for fulfillment in everything the world offers, trying to feel truly alive.
Just one chapter later, we see Jesus meeting the woman at the well—a story I’ve always loved.
Jesus goes out of His way to intentionally engage the Samaritan woman in conversation. He crossed all barriers. He didn’t care who she was. He knew what she carried and that she would carry His message to others.
John 4:7-15
7 When a Samaritan woman came to draw water, Jesus said to her, “Will you give me a drink?” 8 (His disciples had gone into the town to buy food.)
9 The Samaritan woman said to him, “You are a Jew, and I am a Samaritan woman. How can you ask me for a drink?” (For Jews do not associate with Samaritans.[a])
10 Jesus answered her, “If you knew the gift of God and who it is that asks you for a drink, you would have asked him, and he would have given you living water.”
11 “Sir,” the woman said, “you have nothing to draw with, and the well is deep. Where can you get this living water? 12 Are you greater than our father Jacob, who gave us the well and drank from it himself, as did also his sons and his livestock?”
13 Jesus answered, “Everyone who drinks this water will be thirsty again, 14 but whoever drinks the water I give them will never thirst. Indeed, the water I give them will become in them a spring of water welling up to eternal life.”
15 The woman said to him, “Sir, give me this water so that I won’t get thirsty and have to keep coming here to draw water.”
Jesus spoke of “living water”—a gift that goes far beyond quenching physical thirst. In his conversation with the woman, he recognized her need for something much deeper: a thirst of the soul. Jesus explained that everyone who drinks ordinary water will be thirsty again, but those who receive the water he gives will never thirst—their souls will be truly satisfied.
Like the woman at the well, most of us are thirsty, searching for satisfaction in places that ultimately leave us empty. We chase after success, relationships, and money, hoping they will fulfill us, but these things can never satisfy the deepest longings of our hearts.
The woman at the well spent years seeking fulfillment in relationship after relationship, yet her soul remained parched. Then she encountered Jesus. He didn’t offer her improved circumstances—he offered himself, the only one who can truly satisfy our deepest thirst.
Transformed, she leaves her water jar behind and runs to tell everyone about Jesus. She does this because she has finally found what her soul was longing for—the living water that truly quenches every thirst.
So, I ask you: are you thirsty? Where do you go to quench your thirst?

- Starting with His word
- Serving others
- Filling your cup so you can fill other cups
