At times, when I’m in a hurry or don’t want to go in Walmart, I opt for Walmart pickup. Whenever I do, I always take little Jesus with me and give them to the gentleman who is loading my groceries. The last time I went to pick them up, one of the staff members referred to me as “the Jesus lady.” Years ago, I would have never wanted to be called THE JESUS LADY, nor would I have ever thought I would be referred to that way.
Our pastor has been doing a sermon series on BEING A WITNESS. He mentioned yesterday that everyone witnesses in some way. It simply means telling a story that is news to us and communicating back and forth about something we consider important.
To me, witnessing is more than just sharing information; it’s about sharing our personal experiences of faith with others. I will admit that years ago, I wasn’t very good at it. It made me uncomfortable, but today, I embrace being called THE JESUS LADY.
Witnessing is much like sharing COFFEE WITH CUPCAKE; the stories I share are always about encounters with the Holy Spirit—how God is leading me to share, how He has been good to me even amid life’s challenges, including death, chaos, tragedy, disability, hardships, and everything in between.
You don’t have to be a preacher, have scripture memorized, or study at a seminary to be a witness. You just need a relationship with Jesus, and He will guide you.
I have often shared the story about a lady I encountered at Target in 2010. When God prompted me to buy her some lights, I was reluctant, but I obeyed and told her that God had directed me to buy them for her. I think about that experience often. She had a need she didn’t even know about, but when God spoke, I listened and witnessed. It was a transformative moment for both of us.
Witnessing at Target to Dot is one of the reasons I dedicate my efforts to helping cancer patients today.
So why should I witness? Why share stories about how good Jesus is, about how I am saved by grace, or how I’ve survived various challenges in my life?
We should witness because Jesus instructs us to do so. Matthew 28:19, He commands His followers to “go therefore and make disciples of all nations.” This is known as the Great Commission, the mission of the church that guides and directs its purpose. It inspires us to actively share our faith and make a difference in the world.
People need Jesus today, PEOPLE NEED PEOPLE so share your stories and be a witness.
This week, remind yourself to have joy and share Jesus. You need to:
- Show up for JESUS – Start your day in the Word.
2. Show up for OTHERS – Serve others, whether they are like you or not, whether they annoy you or are difficult to understand. That is what Jesus did; He showed up for everyone.
3. Show up for YOU – You need to fill your cup before you can help fill others’ cups.
WE WILL FIND JOY WHEN WE SHOW UP FOR JESUS, OTHERS, AND OURSELVES.
As Father Mike says, “You pray for me, and I will pray for you.”
