Just Show Up

JUST SHOW UP

You know by now how these 3 LITTLE WORDS work.  God places them in my lap, and I go with them.

JUST SHOW UP started when I was reading over the manuscript of GAME ON.  I got to Stringer’s writing piece, and he was saying how people will say, “Let me know what I can do for you.”  He went on to say don’t ask people what they need JUST SHOW UP.  The next day I received a note from a cancer survivor, and she wrote this, “I have learned to JUST SHOW UP!” Next, I began reading a new book that Geovanni suggested to me, This Is Marketing.  I got to a subtitle that stated, Marketing in 5 Steps.  Guess what number 5 was?  You guessed it SHOW UP!

If you all don’t believe that God speaks trust me, He does.  Sometimes in a low voice, but at other times in a megaphone.

What does it mean to JUST SHOW UP?

It means for you to show up regularly, consistently and generously.  Many people feel that showing up has to do with talent; however, it is the impact that your presence makes.  In certain situations, you may not even have to say a word.  The ministry of moments (moments spent with a person) is more meaningful than anything else.

I ask you- do you show up? Do you show up when you really don’t want to, or do you make excuses?  We are all guilty of not showing up at some time or another, but as Jay as always told us “What is easy isn’t always best!”  It is easy at times not to put effort into showing up, but is it what is best?

Philippians 2:1-7 New International Version (NIV)

Imitating Christ’s Humility

2 Therefore if you have any encouragement from being united with Christ, if any comfort from his love, if any common sharing in the Spirit, if any tenderness and compassion, 2 then make my joy complete by being like-minded, having the same love, being one in spirit and of one mind. 3 Do nothing out of selfish ambition or vain conceit. Rather, in humility value others aboveyourselves, 4 not looking to your own interests but each of you to the interests of the others.

5 In your relationships with one another, have the same mindset as Christ Jesus:

6 Who, being in very nature[a] God,

    did not consider equality with God something to be used to his own advantage;

7 rather, he made himself nothing

by taking the very nature[b] of a servant,

    being made in human likeness.

So why should we show up?

We should show up because we are to value others above self.  We are to be of the same mindset of God.  We are to love as Christ loves.   The main reason is because it is our job for Christ to JUST SHOW UP and because Jesus showed up for us.

Jesus was planned for. God knew years before that Jesus would be the sacrificial lamb that would save all of us from our sins. Jesus showed up for us from the day of His birth to the day that he carried His cross.  The cross He bared for us is indescribable.  Jesus does show up for us today and every day.

How does Jesus show up?

SOMETIMES UNEXPECTEDLY

Jesus shows up unexpected. God knew His plan, but Mary, the mother of Jesus, didn’t.  Jesus wasn’t a planned pregnancy for her.  She was shocked.  And Joseph well he couldn’t believe it.  Can you imagine if this happened today?   Would your boyfriend believe that you were carrying Jesus?  Jesus was an unexpected gift.  God showed up, and at times today He shows up when we least expect it.

AT THE PERFECT TIME

Jesus shows up at the perfect time.  Lazarus, the brother of Martha and Mary, was ill and Mary sent for Jesus.  They waited on Jesus, and He didn’t get there. Lazarus took his last breath, and Mary and Martha were distraught.  Where was Jesus?   When He finally arrived, Mary said to him, “If you had been here earlier Lazarus would have lived.”  Jesus wept with Mary and Martha. He was distraught because they were upset.   He loved them but He had to wait on His arrival.   He waited for the perfect time to raise Lazarus from the dead.  Because of this Jesus exhibit How deep His love is and how powerful He is.

God has shown up for us so we should show up for Him.

We show up because that is what Christians are supposed to do.  As followers of Jesus, we should be the first ones to show up.  As representatives of Him, it is our job as His disciples to serve others and JUST SHOW UP.  When we show up, we share with others how awesome God is!

Many are worried they won’t know what to say when they show up.    I have told this to people many times.  At times in my life when people have been there for me.  I can’t recall most of what anyone said, so what does that tell you?  Don’t worry about the words from your mouth only worry about letting someone know you care by just showing up.

When I was in Walmart yesterday the song, I WILL LOVE YOU THROUGH IT by Martina McBride was bellowing out of the speakers.  I haven’t heard that song in years, but as I pushed the buggy my ears picked up on the lyrics.

When you’re weak, I’ll be strong
When you let go, I’ll hold on
When you need to cry, I swear
That I’ll be there to dry your eyes
When you feel lost and scared to death,
Like you can’t take one more step
Just take my hand, together we can do it
I’m gonna love you through it

When this road gets too long

I’ll be the rock you lean on

Just take my hand, together we can do it

I’m gonna love you through it.

Isn’t this exactly what God does for us?  He loves us through every situation.  Isn’t this what we are to do as servants of God?  Love His children through it?

Christ shows up and loves us through it.  So JUST SHOW UP and love others through it, whatever it may be!

Hebrews 12 NIV

Therefore, since we are surrounded by such a great cloud of witnesses, let us throw off everything that hinders and the sin that so entangles.  And let us run this race with perseverance the race marked out for us, fixing our eyes on Jesus.
