CLING TO JESUS

February 24, 2025 • 1 Comment

A few weekends ago, I had the joy of taking care of our little Kate. Let me tell you, she is very attached to her mom. Since her mom was out of town, she clung to me instead. I couldn’t even go to the bathroom without her right beside me. She would cry and cry if I slipped out of her sight. Even at night, she would crawl right on top of me, holding on tightly for fear that I might leave her.   Then yesterday, Anna and Carson left Coker in the nursery at church. He was asleep when they left him, so when he woke up, he was in the nursery worker’s arms, not his momma’s. Anna said he was almost hyperventilating. He is also so attached to his momma.

Both these babies were settled and peaceful when they were back in their parents’ arms.

Cling means to hold fast, dependence upon a need. These babies were dependent on their momma for the calm, peace, and comfort they needed.

These experiences made me realize how much we need to cling to someone who can bring us peace. Where do we turn for refuge? That Someone is Jesus.

Why should we turn to Jesus and cling to Him?

Think of Jesus. He is and always will be the calm in the storm. He was in a boat during a storm and still had peace and slept. What does this tell us about Jesus?

When I feel sad and weary, alone, or scared—when I wonder why things happen—I need to cling to Jesus, just as Kate did with me when she was missing her mom and just like Coker did when Carson picked him up from the nursery.

To “cling” to God is to trust in his promises, to seek his favor, to care only for his approval and not for that of men, to invest time in his service, and to always keep his praise on your lips. To cling to Him is to stay so close to Him sin can’t be present.

We cling to God by surrendering ourselves to Him and being filled with the Holy Spirit. We should follow His lead and His life path.

Joshua was Moses’ successor. Before his death, he gave the people some final instructions.

Joshua 23:6-8

Be very strong to keep and do all that is written in the book of the law of Mosses, without turning aside to the right hand nor to the left… you shall cling to the Lord your God just as you have done to this day.

This is much more than just having God in our hearts. In this scripture, clinging means to hold fast, implying dependence and need. He told them to cling to God and warned them not to cling to the customs of other nations.  God has shown himself to be faithful, bringing Israel out of Egypt and into the promised Land.

We live in a time where anti-Christian forces are forceful, just like back in the day. Joshua knew the nation’s weak spots just like Jesus knows ours.

So, let’s continue to cling to Jesus, just like those babies cling to their momma. Let’s be reminded of what a comfort Jesus is to us. As it says in Hebrews 10:23, turn away from false comfort in the world and cling to Him who is faithful.

So remember:

1. Show up for JESUS – Start your day in the Word.

2. Show up for OTHERS – Serve others, whether they are like you or not, whether they annoy you or you don’t understand them. That is what Jesus did; He showed up for EVERYONE.

3. Show up for YOU—You need to fill your cup before you can help fill others’ cups. We will find joy when we show up for Jesus, others, and ourselves.

Have a blessed week- Cupcake loves and prays for you.

Therefore, since we are surrounded by such a great cloud of witnesses, let us throw off everything that hinders and the sin that so entangles.  And let us run this race with perseverance the race marked out for us, fixing our eyes on Jesus.
