ALL THE FEELS
In October on Coffee with CupcakeLauren got upset and said she couldn’t even watch it because I got teary. When I get upset, it makes my girls nervous and even more anxious. Why? Because I don’t ever show those emotions. When I need to have a good cry, I enclose myself in my own little world and let the floodgates open up.
One of my friends texted me to check on me, and I told her how Lauren was upset with me. She said IT IS OKto cry! Your girls need to see that at times.
I thought that is so true. In today’s world many of us hide our emotions or we shift our emotions of how we really feel and only show a made-up world. We not only hide behind our front doors, but we also hid behind social media.
That is what I don’t want to do. I want everyone to know that LIFE IS HARD, DIFFICULT AND AT TIMES SCARY. Life isn’t always cake and ice cream, balloons and roses.
Showing emotions doesn’t mean that we don’t trust God. Emotions bring us to our knees in more powerful prayer to God. This is the way we help others. We help others by sharing our pain, our sorrow and our fear.
When we show our emotions, we are letting the Holy Spirit in to comfort us. (John 14:26). The devils work becomes more difficult when we show our emotions and let Christ comfort us.
Katie has a master’s in counseling and her undergraduate degree in psychology, so she loves things that teaches you about personalities, emotions, and characteristics. She had me watch the movie Inside Out. The movie takes place in the mind of a young girl named Riley. The scenes navigate through all of Riley’s emotions- Joy, Sadness, Anger, Fear and Disgust. It depicts how emotions influence our actions. It is a great movie that teaches us the reason why we must have all emotions and that it is ok to have emotions.
The one most important thing we must understand about emotions is that our emotions must be motivated for the proper reason and we can’t let negative emotions take residence within us.
Let’s first look at the word emotion.
EMOTION:a naturalstate of mind deriving from one’s circumstances, mood, or relationships. Strong feelings accompanied with feelings.
Emotions are natural. God made us to have emotions.
A TIME FOR EVERYTHING
Ecclesiastes 3:1
3 There is a time for everything,
and a season for every activity under the heavens:
(skip down to verse 4)
a time to weep and a time to laugh,
a time to mourn and a time to dance,
Gods plan for our life involves all emotions. There will be times when we cry, but then there will be times when we laugh. Life isn’t all one emotion and none of the next emotion. We do, however, need to have the correct emotion at the proper times.
Move down to Ecclesiastes 3:11He has made everything beautiful in its time. The proper emotion at the appropriate time brings about Gods purposes.
11 He has made everything beautiful in its time.
The entire Bible is full of examples of emotions. From the beginning to the end there are emotions.
Gideon had fear, doubt and anxiety.
Jonah ran because of fear.
David showed the emotion of depression.
Jeremiah was sad.
I take a step back and I look at the life of Jesus. Jesus had a multitude of emotions. He wept, He got mad, He was in distress, and everything in between. His emotions were motivated for the proper reason. He had the correct focus for His feelings. He was still in control of His emotions and didn’t let negative emotions linger for long periods of time. The result of His emotions always accomplished God’s will.
Jesus was funny Mark 10:25 New International Version (NIV)
25 It is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for someone who is rich to enter the kingdom of God.”
Jesus was annoyed Mark 10:14 New International Version (NIV)
14 When Jesus saw this, he was indignant. He said to them, “Let the little children come to me, and do not hinder them, for the kingdom of God belongs to such as these.
Jesus wept (Martha & Mary, death of Lazarus) John 11:35 New International Version (NIV)
35 Jesus wept.
Jesu was in distress Luke 22:42 New International Version (NIV)
42 “Father, if you are willing, take this cup from me; yet not my will, but yours be done.”
Jesus was mad Matthew 21:12-13 New International Version (NIV)
Jesus at the Temple
12 Jesus entered the temple courts and drove out all who were buying and selling there. He overturned the tables of the money changers and the benches of those selling doves. 13 “It is written,” he said to them, “‘My house will be called a house of prayer,’[a] but you are making it ‘a den of robbers.’[b]”
Jesus had joyJohn 15:11 New International Version (NIV)
11 I have told you this so that my joy may be in you and that your joy may be complete.
Jesus often expressed deep emotion. We should never be afraid to show our emotions or be afraid to reveal our true feelings. Be honest and don’t try to hide behind a mask of EVERYTHING IS OK.
How many times has someone asked you, “How are you?” and you answer with the response, “OK?” Have you ever thought about answering how you really feel?
The next time you restrain from showing emotions remember Jesus faced all emotions while walking on this earth. Don’t hold back, don’t restrain from showing emotions that will allow the outpouring of something powerful.
It is OK to have ALL THE FEELS and if you need to just OPEN THE FLOODGATES!
CHALLENGES FOR THE WEEK:
- Keep your daily appointment
- Dig into the word
- Show those emotions (at the proper time)
- Fill your cup so you can keep filling other cups.
Have an awesome week!
